For soft fruit crops, development focuses primarily on using multiple light colors to influence the plant. This encourages the plant to produce more fruit, even during shorter days.
In the Netherlands, the typical strawberry, a short-day plant, produces more fruit as the days shorten. By controlling various light colors, the plant can be “tricked” into staying active and producing more fruit. For blackberries, which are still in the early stages of transitioning to LED cultivation, improvements are also being seen. For instance, green light can be used to make it easier to distinguish between ripe and unripe blackberries.
